For this first time since his landmark victory against Bayer, cancer victim DeWayne “Lee” Johnson speaks out.
In August, a San Francisco jury awarded Johnson $289 million after finding his deadly cancer was likely caused by exposure to Monsanto’s RangerPro weedkiller. RangerPro is the sister product to the more popular Roundup weedkiller. Both are made by Monsanto, a division of Bayer AG.
Although the jury awarded $289 million, $250 of that was marked as punitive damages. The judge overseeing the case last month reduced the damage award to $39 million in compensatory and an additional $39 million in punitives for a total of $78 million.
Johnson accepted the reduced award but Bayer – Monsanto appealed anyway. Johnson unfortunately now won’t likely see any of his winnings as his cancer is terminal. He will likely die before the appeals are over.
Johnson spoke for the first time since the trial. He appeared at a student group trying to ban the popular weedkiller from state college campuses in California. Until contracting non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Johnson was a school groundskeeper in Benicia, California.
In a speech taped by CBS affiliate KPIX, Johnson said,
“This is way bigger than I am. I’m just happy to be a part of it. Like I said, I’m the leaf that didn’t die. When I brought it up to my supervisor, he told me, ‘I think it takes years for you guys to get cancer from that stuff.’”
Many environmentalists and medical professionals believe that the active ingredient in Roundup, glyphosate, causes cancer in humans. An internal email that recently surfaced from Monsanto suggests it may the other chemicals in the herbicide that when mixed with glyphosate makes the product problematic. Regardless, we believe that homeowners, groundskeepers, farmers and others that have used Roundup and RangerPro are at serious risk of cancer.
An expedited trial for an elderly couple both of whom are suffering cancer was just set for March 18th. The couple says they developed cancer after years of use of Roundup. Like Lee Johnson, their health is such that assuming they win, any appeal will crush their hopes of receiving a dime.
Seeking Bayer Monsanto Whistleblowers and Roundup Cancer Victims
The defective products lawyers at Mahany Law are seeking both cancer victims and insiders that worked at Monsanto or any of their labs.
Cancer victims are entitled to monetary damages if their cancer was likely caused by exposure to glyphosate herbicide products. Those damages can include medical expenses, future medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering. If a jury believes that Bayer deliberately covered up the dangers of their products, a jury can also award punitive damages.
Did Monsanto lie about the dangers of glyphosate? We have no doubts and that is why we are also seeking whistleblowers with inside information. We believe Monsanto’s track record shows it hid the dangers of PCB’s for decades. Now we believe they are doing the same thing with glyphosate.
Why? Money. Roundup and RangerPro are the number one selling herbicides in the world. The company has created a billion dollar empire. Even if you wish to anonymously send us internal documents or speak with us “off the record,” we would love to talk to you. Your phone call could literally save lives.
For more information, visit our Roundup whistleblower and cancer victim information page. That page has two specially produced videos, one for cancer victims and one for company insiders. The video below comes from KPIX.
